British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua narrowly escaped death on Monday after being involved in a fatal road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Makun, Ogun State.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. when the Lexus SUV conveying the 36-year-old boxer reportedly suffered a tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control and collide with a stationary truck near Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange.
Eyewitnesses reported that two occupants of the vehicle believed to be travelling with Joshua died on the spot, while Joshua sustained minor injuries and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
Ogun State Police Command confirmed the crash, stating that Joshua is “fine” and receiving medical attention. Promoter Eddie Hearn, speaking from holiday, said: “Thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images.”
Joshua, who has family roots in nearby Sagamu, was visiting Nigeria following his recent knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, 2025.
Authorities from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) responded to the scene, and investigations into the exact cause are ongoing.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is notorious for frequent accidents due to heavy traffic and road conditions.
Fans worldwide have expressed relief at Joshua’s survival, with prayers pouring in on social media alongside condolences for the deceased.
