An Arik Air flight from Lagos to Abuja made a safe diversion to Benin Airport (DNBE) on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, following an in-flight engine anomaly detected during the cruise phase.

The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the incident in a statement released Wednesday morning, stating that the flight crew observed abnormal indications on one of the aircraft’s engines mid-flight and promptly declared a PAN-PAN (urgency) call before diverting to the nearest suitable airport.

The NSIB said a full technical investigation has been launched, with investigators already on site at Benin Airport to examine the aircraft, retrieve flight data recorders (black boxes), and interview the crew.

Arik Air issued a statement confirming the safe diversion and thanking passengers for their understanding: “We regret any inconvenience caused. The safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority. The aircraft is undergoing full inspection, and we are working closely with the NSIB and relevant authorities.”

Passengers were accommodated in hotels in Benin City and arrangements are being made for onward travel to Abuja or return to Lagos.

This incident is the latest in a series of engine-related diversions and technical issues affecting Nigerian carriers in recent months, renewing calls for stricter maintenance oversight and fleet renewal.
