Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially welcomed former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Kwankwaso joined the coalition-backed ADC on Monday, March 30, 2026, in Kano, where he registered as a member and received his party membership card.
Reacting to the development, Atiku, in a short tweet, said: “When men of conviction come together, power trembles. Welcome aboard.”

The tweet was accompanied by a photo of Kwankwaso raising his ADC membership card, symbolising his official entry into the party.
The registration event drew prominent political figures, including former Senate President David Mark, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kogi State Senator Dino Melaye, and former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun.

Prior to the defection, Atiku and Kwankwaso had met in Abuja on Saturday. In a statement on X, Atiku described the meeting as a courtesy visit during which they discussed national issues.
“This evening, I received the former Governor of Kano State and the Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on a courtesy visit. We had a robust discussion on the state of the nation,” he wrote.

Kwankwaso’s move to the ADC is seen as a significant boost to the opposition coalition, strengthening its base in the North-West and adding to the growing list of high-profile politicians realigning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
