Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially welcomed Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as a “significant moment” in Nigeria’s political coalition-building.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, Atiku referred to Obi as his “brother and associate,” expressing delight at the development and anticipation for a “robust working relationship” aimed at strengthening opposition politics.

“Today marks a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country, with the official declaration of my brother and associate, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” Atiku wrote.

He added: “It is my pleasure to welcome him officially, as we look forward to a robust working relationship that will foster a virile opposition, one that will ultimately form a government capable of bringing prosperity and peace to our people.”

Atiku symbolically noted that “as the ADC Coalition train leaves Enugu, the capital of the Southeast region,” he hopes it inspires other patriots to join the cause.

The declaration took place in Enugu amid fanfare, with Obi citing the need for a stronger, united platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of future elections.

Political analysts view the merger as a strategic realignment within opposition circles, potentially reshaping the landscape for 2027. Obi’s massive youth and grassroots support base is seen as a major asset for the ADC.
