Eyewitnesses told DDNewsOnline that the attackers, numbering over 20 and heavily armed with AK-47 rifles, stormed the village around 10:30 p.m., shooting sporadically and setting some houses ablaze.

Among the deceased was Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim, a 75-year-old widow widely respected in the community for her role as a local midwife and community elder. The other four victims were young men in their 20s and 30s who reportedly attempted to resist the bandits or protect their families.

The assailants also abducted an unspecified number of villagers, mostly women and children, before fleeing into the nearby forests with looted foodstuffs, livestock, and valuables.

Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, stating that security forces have been deployed to the area to pursue the bandits and rescue the abducted persons.

“Preliminary investigation shows this was a calculated attack aimed at terrorising the community. Our tactical teams, in collaboration with sister security agencies, are on the trail of the criminals. We urge residents to remain calm and provide credible information,” SP Abiodun said.

The attack is the latest in a series of deadly incursions in Shiroro and surrounding local government areas, where bandits have carried out kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling, and killings with alarming frequency.

Community leaders have called on the federal and state governments to deploy more troops and establish permanent military outposts to curb the menace.
