Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has arrived back in Nigeria after serving her prison term in the United Kingdom, reliable family sources and close associates confirmed on Monday, January 27, 2026.
Mrs. Ekweremadu was released from a UK prison in late December 2025 after serving approximately half of her 4-year, 6-month sentence for organ trafficking and conspiracy to facilitate illegal organ removal. She was convicted alongside her husband in March 2023 at the Old Bailey in London.
She quietly returned to Nigeria over the weekend via a private arrangement and has since reunited with family members in Abuja and Enugu. Sources say she is currently receiving medical attention and resting privately.
Meanwhile, Senator Ike Ekweremadu remains in UK custody serving the remainder of his 9-year, 6-month sentence. He is eligible for release on licence in 2027 after serving half his term, subject to good behaviour and UK parole board approval.
The couple was found guilty of arranging for a young man to donate a kidney to their daughter Sonia, who was suffering from kidney failure, in exchange for financial inducement. The case drew widespread attention in Nigeria and abroad, leading to their conviction under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act.

The Ekweremadu family has maintained that the arrangement was not for financial gain but a desperate attempt to save their daughter’s life, and they have continued to appeal the conviction in UK courts.
Beatrice Ekweremadu’s return is seen as a partial relief for the family after nearly three years of separation and legal battles.
