Unidentified gunmen have killed 13 people and wounded nine others after storming the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg city centre.

The attack occurred shortly after 11pm on Tuesday when more than 10 armed suspects arrived in a vehicle, entered the settlement through both entrances, and opened fire on residents at multiple locations before fleeing the scene.

One of the victims later died in hospital, bringing the confirmed death toll to 13.
Police have launched a massive manhunt for the suspects. The motive for the attack remains unknown.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that the suspects moved through the area shooting indiscriminately at residents and community members.
