The Federal Government of Nigeria has directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to immediately suspend the enforcement of the ban on sachet and small-volume alcoholic beverages, otherwise known as “sachet alcohol” or “mini spirits.”

The directive was contained in a memo dated February 11, 2026, signed by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, and addressed to the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye.

The memo, sighted by DDNewsOnline, states: “In the light of ongoing consultations with stakeholders and in consideration of the socio-economic implications, the Federal Government hereby directs NAFDAC to suspend forthwith the enforcement of the ban on sachet and small-volume alcoholic beverages. This suspension takes immediate effect pending further review and the conclusion of broader stakeholder engagements.”

Background NAFDAC had intensified enforcement of the ban originally announced in 2025 and gradually rolled out in recent months, seizing large consignments of sachet alcohol and shutting down production facilities across several states. The agency cited public health concerns, including rising cases of alcohol abuse, liver damage, and addiction among young people and low-income earners.

The ban had been strongly opposed by manufacturers, distributors, trade unions, and some state governments, who argued it would lead to massive job losses, revenue decline, and a surge in illicit (unregulated) alcohol production.

Manufacturers (Distillers Association of Nigeria): Welcomed the suspension as “a victory for common sense and livelihood protection.” while Health advocates & CSOs: Expressed disappointment, warning that the decision prioritises commercial interests over public health.

NAFDAC: Yet to issue an official response, but sources say the agency will comply with the directive while awaiting further guidance from the supervising ministry.

The suspension is expected to take immediate effect nationwide, with NAFDAC officers already instructed to stand down from ongoing raids and seizures related to sachet alcohol.

This is a developing story. DDNewsOnline will bring updates on any reversal, stakeholder reactions, or new timelines for review.
