This development follows the dismissal of a case by the Supreme Court, which had challenged the EFCC’s jurisdiction in probing financial mismanagement within Kogi State during Bello’s tenure.

The EFCC has filed a 16-count charge against Bello, which includes allegations of criminal breach of trust and fraudulent acquisitions of multiple properties in Abuja and Dubai using funds purportedly misappropriated from the state treasury. Specific charges outline expenditures such as N950 million on a Maitama property and significant sums transferred to international accounts. Bello is accused of using his position to siphon state funds for personal gain, with co-defendants also named in the case.

This is part of a broader legal battle against Bello, who had earlier faced separate charges of mismanaging over N80 billion during his governorship. The EFCC’s renewed charges reflect their commitment to pursuing accountability for alleged financial misconduct.

The EFCC had previously issued a public summons for Bello to appear in court, but he failed to show up on multiple occasions. The court had extended the summons to November 14, and Bello’s arrest comes ahead of his scheduled arraignment on November 17

During the arraignment, Bello will be required to enter a plea, either guilty or not guilty, to the charges brought against him. This process is essential in ensuring that the accused is aware of the charges and has the opportunity to respond accordingly.

The arraignment is a crucial step in the criminal justice process, ensuring that the accused is formally informed of the charges against them and has the opportunity to respond.
