Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, Vice President of Equatorial Guinea, has announced the resignation of the entire federal executive council after it failed to meet performance targets set by the government.

In a statement posted on his verified X account on Tuesday, the Vice President, who is also the son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, said the cabinet achieved “barely 10 percent” of its goals.
“The rule is simple: public responsibility has to come with results,” he wrote. “The state puts significant human, material and financial resources at the disposal of the government to address the needs of the population. So the degree of execution achieved is clearly insufficient in relation to the expectations and commitments undertaken.”

Mangue did not specify the exact targets the government had set for the outgoing cabinet.

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has been in power since 1979, making him the world’s longest-serving leader, appointed the outgoing government in 2024 with Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua as Prime Minister. The administration was tasked with implementing economic reforms aimed at benefiting the poorest populations and diversifying the economy away from heavy reliance on oil.

However, Equatorial Guinea’s economy has continued to face a prolonged slowdown driven by declining oil production, lower investment levels, and external shocks. Oil and gas still account for the vast majority of the country’s exports and government revenues.

In a separate statement, the ruling Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE) said the President was dissatisfied with the management of the outgoing government, particularly its failure to implement policies that would reduce dependence on imported goods through local agricultural production.

A new government is expected to be appointed in the coming days.

The development comes as Equatorial Guinea continues to grapple with economic diversification challenges despite its significant oil wealth.
