The Federal Government has announced the death of Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away at the age of 50. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. According to the ministry, Lele died in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, after a protracted illness.

Until his death, Lele served as Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A career diplomat, he was recently appointed by Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Ambassador-designate to Algeria, following confirmation by the Nigerian Senate. Born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University Kano. During his diplomatic career, he served in Nigeria’s foreign missions in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh, earning recognition for his professionalism and dedication to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.

The ministry described the late diplomat as a committed and distinguished officer whose contributions to the Foreign Service would not be forgotten. Receiving his remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, described Lele as:
“A hardworking, humble and fine officer, who will be sorely missed.”

The ministry added that his passing represents a significant loss to the Foreign Service and the nation at large. Lele was buried on Wednesday in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites. The Federal Government extended condolences to his family, associates, and the government and people of Bauchi State, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
