A Dana Air aircraft, on Tuesday, allegedly skidded off the runway Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos State, bringing to attention, once again the safety of aviation in Nigeria.

While details about the incident are still unclear, it is reassuring to hear that no casualties were recorded

Over the years, Nigeria’s aviation safety record has been a topic of discussion. Only recently, Engr. Akin Olateru, the Director General of the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), highlighted that the country has witnessed 78 accidents and four serious incidents between 2005 and 2023. Despite these statistics, Olateru mentioned in September 2023 that Nigeria’s aviation safety record is the best in Africa, with only two fatal accidents occurring in the last ten years.

The safety of air travel is paramount, and incidents like these serve as reminders of the importance of maintaining high standards of safety and ensuring that all necessary precautions are taken to protect passengers and crew.

It is hoped that the relevant authorities will investigate the recent incident thoroughly to identify any underlying causes and take appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
