Born on October 2, 1941, Nwosu was appointed by then Military President General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) to oversee the June 12, 1993 presidential election. This election is widely regarded as the most transparent and credible in Nigeria’s history, though it was later annulled by the military government.

Under Nwosu’s leadership, NEC introduced a new voting system known as Option A4, along with the open ballot system, which greatly simplified the electoral process and resulted in clear, less contestable outcomes.

The election was won by business mogul, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola of the Social Democratic Party, defeating Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention.

However, the military regime halted the announcement of the final results, creating political turmoil and disrupting Nigeria’s path to democracy. The June 12 election and its annulment remain a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

Till date, IBB has not told Nigerians while his military regime annulled the election except for some meaningless remarks here and there.

In July 2024, members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives urged President Bola Tinubu to immortalize Nwosu for his pivotal role in conducting what is still seen as Nigeria’s most credible election. His legacy is central to discussions on the country’s democratic journey.
