In a dramatic twist in the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, a Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has granted an ex-parte order restraining the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Chibuzor Simeon Amadi, from receiving or acting on any impeachment notice against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The order, issued on Thursday, January 16, 2026, also bars the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly (Martins Amaewhule), the Clerk of the House, and 29 members of the Assembly from serving, presenting, or forwarding any notice of impeachment proceedings to the Chief Judge or any other authority.

The interim injunction was granted following an ex-parte application filed by Governor Fubara through his legal team, seeking to preserve the status quo amid threats by the pro-Wike faction of the Assembly to proceed with impeachment processes.

Justice [Name of the presiding judge, if available] held that the applicant (Governor Fubara) demonstrated a prima facie case of urgency and potential irreparable harm if the respondents were allowed to proceed with the threatened impeachment action without due process.

The court ordered all parties to maintain the status quo pending the hearing of the substantive motion on notice, fixed for January 22, 2026.

This ruling comes just hours after the pro-Wike lawmakers held a press conference insisting on serving the impeachment notice within days, accusing the governor of blackmail, gross misconduct, and breach of trust.

Governor Fubara’s camp described the court order as “a victory for the rule of law and constitutional democracy,” while accusing the rival Assembly faction of attempting to subvert governance in the state.

The decision further deepens the constitutional and political stalemate in Rivers State, with parallel factions claiming legitimacy in the House of Assembly, ongoing court battles, and heightened tension ahead of local government elections.

Security has been reinforced around the Government House, High Court complex, and Assembly quarters in Port Harcourt to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
