The Bayero University Kano (BUK) has launched an investigation into allegations of online impersonation and financial misconduct involving one of its students.
The university’s spokesperson, Lamara Garba, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday, noting that the institution had commenced a formal inquiry into reports linking the student to online scamming activities.

The case followed allegations made by United States-based Nigerian academic and public commentator Farooq Kperogi, who accused a student identified as Ismail Sani of impersonation and fraud.
According to the statement, the university management maintains strict standards of conduct and discipline for all students and treats any action capable of bringing the institution into disrepute with seriousness.

“The management wishes to state that Bayero University Kano maintains strict standards of conduct, discipline and character for all students throughout the duration of their studies,” the statement said.
Garba explained that the preliminary inquiry would establish the student’s current academic status and determine whether he falls under the university’s disciplinary jurisdiction.

He clarified that the institution’s authority to impose disciplinary measures applies only to registered students and does not extend to alumni or private individuals.
“The University also wishes to emphasise that the personal actions of any individual student do not represent the values or character of Bayero University Kano as an institution,” he said.

According to the university, the appropriate authorities are reviewing the matter in line with established rules and disciplinary procedures governing students’ conduct.
The management also commended the philanthropic efforts of Kperogi and other individuals who often provide financial support to students struggling to pay tuition fees and other academic expenses.

It noted that such acts of generosity contribute significantly to expanding access to education and supporting deserving students.
The university assured members of the public that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken if the allegations are proven.

“Should the allegations be substantiated, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with the university’s regulations and applicable laws,” the statement added.
The institution further urged the public to allow the investigative process to run its course and refrain from spreading unverified information.

Meanwhile, Kperogi alleged that the student had previously solicited financial assistance from him on multiple occasions, including requests for tuition fees and other expenses, before allegedly impersonating a female student named “Halima Tahir” to obtain additional funds.
