A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday remanded former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), his son Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and associate Hajia Bashir Asabe in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of their bail applications.
The order was issued by Justice Emeka Nwite after the trio were arraigned on a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering and unlawful acquisition of proceeds of crime amounting to billions of naira, filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
All defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges, which span offences allegedly committed between 2015 and 2025 a period covering Malami’s tenure as AGF under the Buhari administration.

The EFCC alleges the use of corporate entities like Metropolitan Auto Tech Limited and Meethaq Hotels Ltd to conceal funds, including over N1 billion in bank transactions and property acquisitions in Abuja, Kano, and Kebbi States.
Justice Nwite rejected an oral bail application from the defence, led by Joseph Daudu (SAN), stating it would “ambush” the prosecution. The court adjourned to January 2, 2026, for hearing of the formal bail motions.
