The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed a viral social media notice directing prospective Police Constable recruits to report for training today, September 18, 2026. In a disclaimer issued on its official X handle, the Force said the publication is not an official communication and should be disregarded. It stamped the circulating document with a bold FAKE watermark and advised candidates to rely only on official recruitment portals and verified channels.

Thirty-Seven Suspected Illegal Miners Die In Custody In Niger State
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has confirmed that about 37 persons suspected of being illegal miners died early Thursday in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Minna. The incident was said to have occurred due to overcrowding and poor ventilation. The governor declared three days of mourning, set up a committee of inquiry, and postponed the start of campaigns for January elections. Police say investigation has commenced.

Manufactured Goods Imports Surge To Over N18 Trillion In First Half
Nigeria’s manufactured goods imports surged Year-on-Year by 16.9 percent to N18 trillion in the first half of 2026, according to Foreign Trade Statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS. The figure rose from N15.4 trillion in H1 2025, driven by a sharp rise in Q2. The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria has warned that high operating costs, expensive credit and energy challenges are eroding local competitiveness.

Net Domestic Assets Rise To N101 Trillion, Foreign Assets Fall — CBN
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has reported that Net Domestic Assets, NDA, rose by 27.1 percent Year-on-Year to N101.006 trillion in July 2026 from N79.496 trillion in July 2025. However, Net Foreign Assets, NFA, declined by 6.6 percent to N37.71 trillion from N40.39 trillion, indicating continued pressure on the country’s external position and domestic liquidity.

Constitution Amendment: State Police Bill Sent To 36 State Assemblies
Nigeria’s quest for State Police has entered a decisive phase as the National Assembly has transmitted the Constitution Sixth Alteration Bill, 2026, to all 36 State Houses of Assembly for concurrence. The bill seeks to create state police to address security challenges. At least 24 assemblies must approve it before it returns to the National Assembly for transmission to the President for assent.

FG Wins Mambilla Arbitration, Tribunal Awards Costs Against Sunrise
Nigeria has secured a major legal victory as an International Chamber of Commerce Tribunal in Paris dismissed the $2.35 billion claim by Sunrise Power and Transmission Company over the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project. The tribunal ordered Sunrise and its promoter, Leno Adesanya, to refund 75 percent of Nigeria’s legal costs. President Bola Tinubu described it as the removal of the biggest legal hurdle to the long-delayed project.

LPG Price Hike Adds Pressure On Households
The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, has risen to between N1,300 and N1,600 per kilogram in Lagos and parts of the Southwest, up from about N1,200 last month. Marketers attribute the increase to rising transportation costs, distribution expenses and high crude prices. NSCDC Orders High-Powered Probe Into Miners’ Deaths
NSCDC Commandant-General, Prof. Ahmed Audi, has constituted a high-powered investigative team led by the Deputy Commandant-General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation to probe the deaths of the suspected illegal miners in Minna. The Commandant-General said remains have been deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, for medical examination, while the outcome of the probe would be made public.

The naira was quoted at 1,328 per dollar at the official window on Thursday morning, steady compared to last week, according to LSEG data. On the parallel market, it traded around 1,390 per dollar, supported by dollar sales by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Across Africa, Zambia’s kwacha eased to 19.94 per dollar, Kenya’s shilling held steady at 129.50/70, while Uganda’s shilling faced pressure from dollar demand.

Europe Migrant Sea Arrivals Fall But Deaths Rise — IOM
The International Organization for Migration, IOM, said Thursday that sea arrivals to Europe have fallen by more than a third this year to about 60,000 from 98,000 last year. However, the journey has become more deadly, with at least 2,292 deaths recorded so far this year compared to 1,999 in the same period last year. The Central Mediterranean remains the deadliest route.

China Coast Guard Vessel Rams Philippine Boat In South China Sea
The Philippine Coast Guard said a China Coast Guard vessel deliberately rammed and damaged a Philippine fisheries vessel, BRP Datu Magat Salamat, about 54 nautical miles off Palawan on Friday morning, September 18. The collision bent and broke starboard railings and displaced deck equipment while the vessel was on a fuel assistance mission for Filipino fishermen. China has not yet responded.

US Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates For First Time In 2026
The US Federal Reserve on Wednesday lowered its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a range of 4 to 4.25 percent, its first cut since December 2024. The Federal Open Market Committee said growth moderated in the first half, job gains slowed and inflation remains somewhat elevated, but the balance of risks warrants easing.
