Edo State is witnessing a intense but needless political turf battle for supremacy between the All Progressive Party’s (APC) Governor Monday Okpebholo and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), seemingly, over the control of local government areas, as evidenced by the controversial suspension and replacement of the elected executive members of the LGAs.

The conflict began when Okpebholo requested the suspension of the 18 local government council chairmen, by the State assembly, citing unsubstantiated gross misconduct and insubordination.
However, a Edo State High Court intervened, ordering the status quo to be maintained and restraining the governor together with the House of Assembly, from taking action against the chairmen. Despite this, more than half of the chairmen have been unable to gain access to their offices as agents of the state prevented them.
The PDP has accused Okpebholo’s government of attempts to kill democracy in the state by such unconstitutional suspension. But the APC rebutted the allegation, claiming it was necessary to maintain order and stability in the operations of the councils.

The court has adjourned the subsisting case to January 17, 2025.
