Speaking to journalists after the proceedings, El-Rufai’s lead counsel, Mr Oluwole Iyamu (SAN), expressed cautious optimism.

“My name is Oluwole Iyamu; I am a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. I lead the defence team for Malam Nasir El-Rufai. The bail application was argued and responded to, and the ruling has been fixed for April 14,” Iyamu said.

“We look forward to that day. We are hopeful. We have put our arguments before the court, and this is a court of justice. We await the decision of the court,” he added.

Iyamu also confirmed that the legal team is fully prepared for a separate “DSS matter” scheduled for April 10 at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In a dramatic turn of events, El-Rufai was immediately re-arrested within the court premises by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) shortly after the proceedings.

Eyewitnesses reported that DSS personnel, who had maintained a heavy presence around the court, swiftly took custody of the former governor moments after he was removed from the courtroom by operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in a white Hilux vehicle.

El-Rufai was earlier arraigned by the ICPC at the Federal High Court in Kaduna on charges including alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering (suit number FHC/KD/73/2026).

In a related development at the Kaduna State High Court sitting in Kawo on Tuesday, El-Rufai and one Amadu Sule were arraigned on allegations including abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage (suit number KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26).

The ICPC instituted both sets of charges, which are distinct but related to alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as governor.

The former governor has been in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026, following his initial detention by the EFCC and subsequent transfer to the ICPC.

The case remains a high-profile legal battle, with El-Rufai consistently describing the prosecutions as politically motivated persecution linked to his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his criticism of the current administration.

This is a developing story. DDNewsOnline will provide updates as proceedings continue on April 14.
