Abia State Governor Alex Otti has firmly declared his intention to remain in the Labour Party (LP), distancing himself from the defection of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on December 31, 2025.
In a statement issued on Wednesday evening from the Government House in Umuahia, Governor Otti said he would rather stay in the LP to help resolve its lingering leadership and internal crises than follow Obi out of the party.
“I would rather remain in the Labour Party and assist the party in resolving its challenges,” Otti stated, emphasising his commitment to the platform that brought him to power in 2023.
The governor, widely regarded as one of the LP’s most successful elected officials, reiterated that his priority remains delivering good governance to Abia citizens and strengthening the party’s structures for future electoral success.

Otti’s decision comes amid the LP’s public criticism of Obi’s exit, with the party describing his departure as a relief and apologising to Nigerians for fielding him in 2023.
Political observers note that Otti’s stance could help stabilise the LP’s remaining base, particularly in the South-East and South-South, while Obi’s move to the ADC—backed by figures like Atiku Abubakar—aims to consolidate a broader opposition coalition.
