The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum has spoken out against the worrisome trend of polygamy in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, citing the economic pressure it places on the state. Zulum criticized politicians for prioritize election matters over such unwholesome practices, saying they refuse to speak out against polygamy in IDP camps for fear of losing votes. He questioned the silence of Islamic teachers and politicians, asking, “Which Islamic teacher has spoken out against this? Which member has kicked against this situation”?

The governor’s statement has sparked varied reactions from the public. Some have praised Zulum’s courage in speaking out against the issue, while others have criticized the government for allowing the situation to persist.

Popular online platforms are praising Governor, saying, “Finally, we have a true leader in Prof Zulum who is not afraid to tell the truth regardless of political costs”

However, many observers are interested to see how the governor’s call-out will affect relations in the various IDP camps in his state, as he has declared a critical opposition to the trend, which he says, is unsustainable within the state’s meagre resources.
