The House of Representatives has summoned all Service Chiefs and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to appear before the parliament to explain the rising incidents of insecurity across the country.

The green chamber passed the resolution during Tuesday’s plenary session following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Sulaiman Gumi, who represents the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State.

The motion, which enjoyed overwhelming support from lawmakers across party lines, expressed deep concern over the persistent cases of banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and other violent crimes that continue to threaten lives and property nationwide.

Lawmakers noted that despite repeated assurances from the government, insecurity has remained a major challenge, particularly in the North-West, North-East, and parts of the North-Central and South-West regions.

The House resolved that the Service Chiefs and the NSA must appear before the House Committee on National Security and Intelligence to brief lawmakers on current security strategies, operational challenges, and concrete measures being taken to restore peace and stability.

The resolution also directed the committees on Defence, Army, Navy, Air Force, and National Security to interface with the security chiefs and report back to the House within two weeks.

Speaking after the motion was adopted, several lawmakers expressed frustration over the continuous loss of lives and the displacement of citizens due to insecurity. They stressed the need for urgent and decisive action by the security apparatus.

The summons of the Service Chiefs and NSA comes amid growing public criticism of the government’s handling of security matters, especially following recent high-profile abductions and attacks in different parts of the country.
