The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State has categorically dismissed claims that underage persons were registered as voters in the hometown of Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking re-election on the platform of the Accord Party in the August 8, 2026 governorship election.

The allegation surfaced on social media and opposition circles in the past week, with some posts claiming that INEC officials in Ekondo ward deliberately registered minors during the recent Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, purportedly to inflate the voter register in favour of the governor.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, and signed by the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Oluwatoyin Babalola, INEC described the claims as “baseless, malicious and entirely without merit.”

Prof. Babalola stated: “We have conducted a thorough internal review of the registration data from Ekondo and surrounding wards. There is no evidence whatsoever of any underage person being registered as a voter. All registrations complied strictly with the Electoral Act 2022, including the mandatory use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for age verification and facial capture.

“Any claim to the contrary is an attempt to discredit the ongoing CVR process and undermine public confidence in the commission. We invite anyone with credible evidence to present it to our office or the nearest police station for investigation. We will not hesitate to prosecute those found spreading false information capable of inciting violence or electoral malpractice.”

The REC further assured that the commission remains committed to a credible, transparent and inclusive process ahead of the August 8 poll, urging political parties, candidates and the public to focus on issue-based campaigns rather than unsubstantiated allegations.

Accord Party (Governor Adeleke’s party): Described the allegation as “a desperate smear campaign” by opponents who are jittery about the governor’s performance and popularity.
Opposition parties: Yet to formally respond, but some leaders have called for INEC to publish the full voter register for public scrutiny to clear all doubts.

The 2026 Osun governorship election is shaping up as a straight contest between Governor Ademola Adeleke (Accord) and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with other parties yet to finalise their candidates.

This is a developing story.
