The legal community witnessed a significant moment in its impactful history with a public presentation and book launch celebrating the legacy of Hon. Justice S.O. Uwaifo, CON, on Wednesday February 19, 2025 in Lagos. This event immensely honoured the highly respected former Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The book, aptly titled “A Legacy of Jurisprudential Wisdom and Substantive Justice”, reflects Justice Uwaifo’s profound impact on the judiciary, especially through landmark judgments that have shaped legal discourse.

At the Ball Room of the Oriental Hotel Victoria Island, Lagos, where the event took place, was a gathering of eminent legal luminaries, including Professor Mike Ozekhome which SAN, Professor Fabian Ajogwu SAN, and former Attorney General Kanu Agabi SAN and a representative of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Together with several notable attendees, gathering was an eloquent testimony of Justice Uwaifo’s influence and the profound impact of his contributions to the development of the profession.

Professor Mike Ozekhome in his goodwill address recalled with good sense a matter that went all the way to the supreme and back to the lower court and eventually, it was Justice Uwaifo that gave the judgment that resolved the matter.

In his remark, the author said, expressed that the book is undoubtedly a must-read for legal scholars and practitioners seeking deeper insights into judicial reasoning and substantive justice in Nigeria. He said the book represents not only a track of his years on the bench at the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court but also an effort to avail readers the essence of what he sought to achieve through the judicial inquisition that marked his robust career.

”It encapsulates a significant portion of my judicial journey, offering insights into the judgments I delivered, the principles I upheld, and the values that guided me”, said Justice Uwaifo.

The retired judge disclosed that the book also features a summary of some key landmark judgments together with the thought processes and principles that underpinned them.

He said, ”in this book, you will find not just the judgments themselves but also the thought processes and principles that informed them.”

The chief reviewer Professor Fabian Ajogwu SAN, sent representation who was able to take the audience a legal voyage through the 1500 pages of the book highlighting notable landmark Judgments by the author. He urged lawyers to read the book and use it as a reference guide to garnering more judicial knowledge and wisdom.

The Chief launcher, former Attorney General/Minister of Justice Mr. Kanu Godwin Agabi, SAN, who unveiled the book describes Justice Uwaifo as a beacon of integrity, a legal titan, and an Icon in every sense. These remarks highlight Justice Uwaifo’s legacy of integrity, intellectual rigor, and mentorship of young lawyers even after retirement.

Justice Kumai B. Akaahs, OFR, in his foreword, acknowledges Uwaifo’s judgments as both intellectually rigorous and, at times, humorously insightful.

‘’These landmark judgments, which to my mind were written with the highest intellectual rigor, though with a touch of humor times (when appropriate), celebrate the remarkable contributions of Hon. Justice S. O. Uwaifo, an erudite former Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Justice Uwaifo stands as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished jurists, with a judicial career marked by profound insight, clarity, and a deep commitment to Justice’’, said Justice Akaahs.

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-olu represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG). Barrister Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, expressed that Justice Uwaifo’s mentorship of young lawyers highlights his continued role in legal development even after retirement.

With the preface written by O. A. Omonuwa, SAN, OFR, FCArb, FNIM and attendance by notable figures such as former Edo State Governor Sen. Prof. Oserheimen A. Osunbor, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, and Chief Emeka Ngige, SAN, Chairman, Council Of Legal Education, Inna Wilson SAN, Prof. Akin Badmus, Tunde Busari SAN, Alex Izinyon SAN, Mohammed Belgore SAN, and other dignitaries, the event reflects the high regard in which Justice Uwaifo is held in Nigeria’s legal community.
