A factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has been arraigned before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama over allegations of providing false information to the police. Turaki was arraigned on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Justice Peter Kekemeke.
The defendant is being prosecuted by the office of the Inspector-General of Police over a petition he allegedly authored on October 5, 2022. According to the prosecution, Turaki accused one Saidi Mainasara with the intent of triggering police action against him. The alleged offence is said to be punishable under Section 140 of the Penal Code.

Following his plea, prosecution counsel, Usman Rabiu, urged the court to fix a trial date and opposed the defendant’s bail application. He argued that Turaki’s conduct and antecedents should be considered in determining whether bail should be granted. However, defence counsel, Abdulaziz Ibrahim, countered that bail is a constitutional right except in exceptional circumstances, citing provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).
He maintained that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient grounds to deny bail, adding that Turaki did not deliberately evade service of court processes but was out of town at the time. The defence also informed the court that the defendant later appeared voluntarily and apologised for his earlier absence.

In his ruling, Justice Kekemeke held that bail is a constitutional right and that the prosecution had not established compelling reasons to deny the application. The court also noted that a previously issued bench warrant had been vacated following the defendant’s appearance. Turaki was granted bail in the sum of ₦100 million, with one surety in like sum.
The judge stipulated that the surety must be either a Senior Advocate of Nigeria with at least 20 years post-call experience or a legal practitioner with no less than 40 years in practice.
The case was adjourned to June 11, 2026, for the commencement of trial. The development comes amid ongoing internal disputes within the PDP, where Turaki is a key figure in one of the contending factions. Analysts say the case may further complicate the party’s internal dynamics as legal and political battles continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.
