The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest advisory body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, has unanimously endorsed Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election. The development was announced on Tuesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Jubril Gawat, in a post on X.
“FLASH: The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) today unanimously endorsed and adopted the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, to be consensus candidate for the 2027 elections in Lagos State,” Gawat wrote. According to the post, the endorsement was made by GAC leader, Alhaji Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, during a meeting held at Lagos House, Marina.

Gawat further revealed that members of the council also paid for Hamzat’s nomination form. “Alhaji Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi spoke on behalf of the GAC today at the Lagos House, Marina. The GAC members also announced that they paid for his nomination form,” he added.
The endorsement signals growing alignment within the Lagos chapter of the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. It comes just a day after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu publicly endorsed Hamzat as his preferred successor.

Sanwo-Olu made the announcement following a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest the governorship seat before members of the State Executive Council and key party leaders.
“We just received Mr Deputy, who had come with a very powerful delegation of our leaders in the state to inform us of his intention to contest for the seat of the governorship position of the state,” Sanwo-Olu said. “It was unanimous with all of us to say that Mr Deputy Governor is a man who is fit and well-prepared for this job. He is a man who knows where all the rooms in the house are.”

The governor also highlighted Hamzat’s integrity, loyalty, commitment, and support over the past seven years, describing him as ready to lead the state. With the backing of both Governor Sanwo-Olu and the powerful GAC, Hamzat’s position within the ruling party appears strongly consolidated as political activities gradually build toward the 2027 polls.
