It has now come to Light that Gowon had written to Abacha, urging him to spare Obasanjo’s life, and even delivered the letter through his wife, stating that a leader’s role is to do good, not harm.
Speaking recently, during the inaugural Plateau Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival at the 10 Commandments Prayer Altar in Du, Jos South Local Government Area, Gowon disclosed that he had written to Abacha, urging him to show mercy to Obasanjo.

Obasanjo, who was arrested and sentenced to death over accusation of plotting a coup, expressed gratitude for Gowon’s efforts, stating he was unaware of the intervention until it was disclosed. He was among those detained and condemned to death by Abacha’s regime over allegations of wanting to overthrow the government through unlawful means.
Following the disclosure, Obasanjo took time to acknowledge and thank Gowon for his efforts on Day-2 of the same Christmas carol event.
“I want to acknowledge my boss, General Yakubu Gowon. Yesterday, he made a revelation, and I have to thank you specifically for that. When I came out of prison, I had the opportunity to thank friends, inside and outside the country, who pray for my release from prison.

“But I did not know that you wrote a personal letter for my release until you said it yesterday; I thank you for that,” Obasanjo said. He thanked friends and supporters worldwide for their help in obtaining his release during that dark moment of his life.
