Former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN), his wife, and son landed in Kebbi State on Thursday, January 9, 2026, aboard a private jet after successfully meeting the N1.5 billion bail condition imposed by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The family was greeted with a heroic and emotional welcome by hundreds of supporters, political associates, traditional rulers, and community leaders who thronged the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport in Birnin Kebbi to receive them.

Malami, who had been remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre alongside his son Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami and associate Hajia Bashir Asabe since their arraignment on money laundering charges, appeared composed as he stepped off the aircraft with his family. He was immediately surrounded by cheering crowds chanting his name and waving placards of support.

In brief remarks at the airport, Malami expressed gratitude to God, his legal team, and supporters for standing by him during what he described as a “trying period.”

“I thank Almighty Allah for His mercy and all those who believed in justice and stood with us. This is not the end of the journey, but we are grateful for this step forward,” he said.

The family was then escorted in a convoy to their residence in Birnin Kebbi, where more supporters had gathered to celebrate their return and reunion.

The N1.5 billion bail was granted on Tuesday, January 7, 2026, with strict conditions including depositing the sum, surrendering passports, and reporting to court as required. The bail hearing had been adjourned to allow compliance.

Malami’s return to Kebbi has sparked mixed reactions: supporters see it as vindication, while critics argue it highlights selective justice in high-profile cases.
