The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has clarified that the lifting of the ban on sachet alcohol is only temporary, countering widespread misinformation that it has been permanently scrapped.

Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of NAFDAC’s FCT Directorate, made this clear during a press briefing on Monday in Abuja, saying the ban is suspended until December 31, 2025, after which full enforcement will commence.
The temporary suspension was authorized by the Federal Government to allow time for stakeholders — manufacturers and regulators — to adjust and prepare for structured enforcement.
“There is a ministerial lifting on the ban of sachet alcohol, but it is only temporary and will be reviewed by December 31, 2025,” Azikiwe said. “After this date, the full enforcement of the ban will begin”, disclosed Azikiwe.
The NAFDAC Director emphasized that any claims suggesting a permanent reversal are false, misleading and should be disregarded.

As part of its youth protection and public safety initiatives, Azikiwe noted that NAFDAC is also reinforcing responsible alcohol distribution practices, especially by banning sales to individuals under 18.
The agency continues its nationwide engagement with manufacturers and distributors to promote compliance and public safety.
NAFDAC also commended the Distillers and Beverages Association of Nigeria for supporting its nationwide sensitization programs.
However, the Agency confirmed that sachet alcohol range with less than 200 millimeters in volume will be phased out completely after the December 2025 deadline, as part of efforts to reduce alcohol misuse and promote public health.

The consequent implication is that come January 1, 2026, the production and sale of sachet alcohol will likely be fully banned, with regulatory crackdowns expected.
