The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has taken a significant step toward modernising its operational fleet with the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric-powered vehicles, marking the beginning of its transition to greener energy solutions. At a ceremony held on April 21, 2026, the NPF received three specialised buses from the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPF-TF) and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PI-CNG & EV). The event signals the official launch of the Police Force’s move toward sustainable and cost-efficient mobility.

Officials from both organisations described the donation as the first phase of a broader plan to upgrade the Police fleet nationwide. The initiative includes the gradual conversion of existing operational vehicles to CNG, a move expected to significantly reduce fuel costs and lower environmental impact. Beyond equipment provision, the partnership also focuses on capacity building, including training personnel and establishing systems for long-term sustainability.

Responding to the development, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed appreciation to both the NPF-TF and PI-CNG & EV for their support. He described the transition as a strategic necessity that aligns the Nigeria Police Force with global best practices in logistics, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
“The transition to CNG and electric vehicles is critical to improving operational efficiency and resource management,” the IGP said.

He added that the newly acquired buses would enhance personnel mobility and welfare, while plans are underway to establish internal conversion centres to maintain and sustain the fleet. Stakeholders at the event noted that the initiative reflects a growing shift within public institutions toward cleaner energy and more efficient resource utilisation.
