Emergency services raced to the scene on Crossway, near Caldicot, at around 6pm GMT on Sunday, November 2, following reports of a serious incident involving a dog. Officers, including armed response units, and paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service attended the address, but the infant was pronounced dead at the scene.
The dog involved has been seized and removed from the property, police said. A large emergency response, including dozens of police vehicles and several ambulances, was reported in the area, with a police presence maintained overnight at the semi-detached house.

Gwent Police Chief Superintendent John Davies said: “We understand that there will be concerns around this incident, but officers are on scene and will be making further enquiries as the investigation progresses. If you have concerns or information then please do stop and talk with us.”
A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “We were called yesterday at 18:02 to reports of a medical emergency in Rogiet, Caldicot. We sent one Cymru High Acuity Response Unit, an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner, a Duty Operations Manager and one Emergency Ambulance. Crews were supported by our Hazardous Area Response Team.”
Neighbours described hearing “screaming police cars” and seeing a heavy police presence on the quiet street. Rogiet county councillor Peter Strong said the village of around 2,000 residents was “in mourning.”
