The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately declare a National Security Emergency, warning that the worsening insecurity across Nigeria threatens to push the country into anarchy.
In a strongly worded statement signed by its spokesperson, Prof. Abubakar Jiddere, on Wednesday, the NEF expressed deep outrage over the relentless collapse of security nationwide, describing the situation as one of the gravest threats to national stability, economic growth, and social cohesion.

The Forum noted that no region is spared, citing attacks in Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Borno, Oyo, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and other states.
“No nation can claim progress when its citizens live in fear, its communities are under siege, and criminal elements operate with increasing boldness while millions of law-abiding citizens remain vulnerable,” the statement read.
The NEF pointed out that Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution clearly states that “the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government,” and questioned why citizens are increasingly left to fend for themselves against kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, and violent extremists.

The group highlighted the devastating consequences of the crisis, including declining food production, collapsing rural economies, displacement of farmers, loss of investor confidence, and children being deprived of education.
The Forum called for immediate and extraordinary measures, including:
Restructuring and strengthening of intelligence coordination among all security agencies.
Aggressive disruption of kidnapping and banditry networks.
Full investigation and prosecution of sponsors, financiers, and beneficiaries of criminal groups, regardless of status.
Comprehensive auditing of illegal mining operations linked to insecurity.
Enhanced protection of farming communities, schools, and transportation corridors.
Greater transparency and accountability in security expenditures.

The NEF warned that public patience is not unlimited and urged the government to move beyond assurances to measurable, decisive action.
“This is not a partisan issue. This is not a regional issue. This is not an ethnic issue. This is a national emergency,” the statement emphasised.
“The time for assurances has passed. The time for measurable action is now,” the Northern Elders Forum declared.
The demand comes amid continued public outcry over rising cases of kidnapping, banditry, and violent attacks across the country.
