During a meeting at the Government House in Benin City, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, commended the representatives and acknowledged the importance of women empowerment and youth development. She expressed enthusiasm for partnering with the Consulate General, highlighting the need to support vulnerable women who have been violated and to empower them through various initiatives.
Mrs. Anani emphasized the importance of mentorship and digital empowerment for women, stating that plans are underway to groom women in science and technology. She also supported investments in the hospitality sector to empower youths and integrate them into society.
The Consul General of the Republic of South Africa, Prof. Bobby Moroe, expressed his desire to collaborate with the Edo State Government. He highlighted areas of common interest and mutual benefit, including youth development programs, agro-processing and agriculture, science and technology, arts and culture, tourism, and hospitality.
This partnership aligns with ongoing efforts by the Edo State Government to empower youths and women. For instance, the state has urged young people to leverage social media platforms for financial growth and positive impact. Mrs. Anani, speaking at a recent event in Benin City, highlighted the opportunities available through social media and encouraged the youth to turn their online presence into a source of income.
Additionally, the state is implementing the Renewed Hope Initiatives (RHI), focusing on training and empowering women in agriculture, encouraging families to cultivate small gardens, and revitalizing the Young Farmers Club to re-engage young people with agriculture as a viable career path.
The collaboration with the South African Consulate General is expected to further these initiatives, fostering economic growth and social development in Edo State.
The Vice Consul, Ms. Busisiwe Dlamini, highlighted the Consulate General’s initiatives focused on empowering women, stating, ‘Our social responsibility is majorly focused on women empowerment.’
She outlined several initiatives that have empowered women and extended an invitation to the South Africa week, an event that promotes social connections through engaging activities like golf, movies, and entertainment.
In attendance were the Chief Protocol, Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Mabel Oboh, All Progressive Congress (APC), Oredo Local Government Women Leader, Mrs. Esther Kolade amongst other dignitaries.
The meeting ended on a note of optimism and mutual commitment, with both parties looking forward to a fruitful partnership that would enhance the lives of women and youths in Edo State.
