The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has declared war on cultism, unveiling strategies to contain the menace, with firm orders to security agencies to ensure the state is no longer a comfortable shelter for criminal elements. This directive was given during an inaugural security meeting on Tuesday, held behind closed doors in Government House, Benin City.

A statement by the chief press secretary to the governor, Fred Itua, issued from the state house on Tuesday, revealed how the Governor emphasized to the committee that security is his administration’s top priority, citing the alarming rate of cultism in the state. He urged security agencies to collaborate and put an end to cult related killings, particularly in Benin City.

Governor Okpebholo highlighted that the current rate of cultism in the state is unacceptable and that his administration will take decisive steps to ensure that lives and properties are safe from cult-related criminality. He urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing information to aid the crackdown on cult groups and other criminal elements.

The Governor charged the security agencies to smoke out cultists and criminals from their hideouts, urging cooperation and synergy among the agencies, while assuring them of his government’s support in every effort to achieve peace and security in the state.

The State’s Commissioner of Police, Umoru Peter Ozigi, who was at the stakeholders meeting with the governor, confirmed that the security council discussed areas of concern and ongoing efforts. He also disclosed that the Governor has pledged support to ensure the state remains a peaceful place for residents and businesses.

Overall, the governor is taking proactive steps to encourage public and security agencies collaboration, in order to secure the state from the intractable menace of cultists and other criminals.
