The decision of PDP to withdraw from the LG’s election introduces significant political implications for the electoral process. Acting Chairman Bakita Bello confirmed the withdrawal, citing a loss of confidence in the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) as the primary reason.

“We are not participating in the Local Government election and we have so informed ODIEC in writing “

The withdrawal, communicated formally to ODIEC, impacts all 15 Chairmanship candidates and 131 Councillorship candidates that the party had fielded. This move signals the PDP’s disapproval of the election’s perceived fairness and transparency under ODIEC’s oversight.

The withdrawal has worrisome implications, as the absence of PDP, a major political player, reshapes the competitive dynamics of the election. Other parties may gain an edge in previously contested areas.

For now, at the time of filing this report, nobody is quiet sure of how supporters of the PDP may feel about the disenfranchisement, potentially lowering voter turnout or triggering public dissent against the electoral process.

Another thing, the PDP’s withdrawal amplifies scrutiny on ODIEC’s impartiality and operational credibility, raising questions about the election’s legitimacy. Expectedly, the move may strain relations between the PDP and the Ondo State government while influencing future political alignments.

This development underscores the need for robust and credible electoral systems to maintain public trust and uphold democratic principles. The aftermath of the withdrawal will likely shape political discourse in Ondo State moving forward.
