Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging opposition leaders and supporters to unite under a broad coalition reportedly led by former Senate President David Mark.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, during a well-attended rally in Enugu, the South-East regional capital, where Obi described the move as “a family call to rebuild Nigeria” and a necessary step for effective opposition ahead of future elections.
“Today, I answer the call of my family and millions of Nigerians who believe in a new Nigeria. I am joining the ADC to strengthen the opposition and work towards prosperity and peace for our people,” Obi declared amid cheers from supporters.
He framed the defection as part of fresh political realignments, signalling a strategic consolidation of forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in looming nationwide contests.
Sources indicate the coalition draws inspiration from David Mark’s experience and cross-party appeal, aiming to bridge regional and ideological divides.
The development follows months of internal crises in the Labour Party, which earlier issued a statement “apologising” to Nigerians for fielding Obi in 2023 and claiming relief at his exit.
