A police constable attached to the Insurance Office of the Borno State Police Command, Alhaji Muhammad (also referred to as Mohammad Muhammad), has returned the sum of ₦2.6 million mistakenly credited to his United Bank for Africa (UBA) account, earning widespread praise for his honesty and integrity.
The incident came to light after a Moniepoint customer, Bello Jafar, publicly commended the officer in a Facebook post on Friday, February 7, 2026. Jafar wrote:
“I would like to formally express my appreciation for Mohammad Alhaji Muhammad, a loyal customer of United Bank for Africa (UBA) and a police officer of exceptional integrity. He received the money in error from a Moniepoint customer but took immediate steps to ensure it was returned to the rightful owner.”
Confirming the development in a telephone interview with PUNCH Online on Monday, February 10, 2026, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said the State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajeed, invited the constable for a meeting to commend his action and hear the full details.
According to ASP Daso:
“When he received the alert on his phone last Thursday, he said he knew he was not expecting any particular money. The next day, Friday, first thing in the morning, he took permission and went to his bank to complain that a certain amount of money was sent to him which he was not expecting. He requested that the bank do justice regarding the money.”

The bank traced the transaction to a UBA branch in Sokoto and contacted the manager. Muhammad was subsequently issued a consent form authorizing the reversal of the funds to the rightful owner.
During the meeting with the Commissioner on Monday, the constable explained his motivation:
“When asked in the meeting with the CP, he said he is a policeman, and he knows the type of negative notion a lot of people have about the police. That is why he refused to claim the money because discipline is part of what they were taught in police colleges.”
The commissioner reportedly praised Muhammad for his integrity, discipline, and commitment to the image of the Nigeria Police Force, describing his action as “worthy of emulation” and a positive reflection on the ongoing reforms in the Force.
The incident has generated widespread admiration online, with many Nigerians calling for more recognition for honest officers amid persistent public distrust of the police.
