In one of the most creative and symbolic protests seen in recent Nigerian history, hundreds of demonstrators on Monday, February 9, 2026, stormed the National Assembly complex carrying mattresses, pillows, duvets, and sleeping bags to press for the immediate passage of the Electoral Act amendment that mandates real-time electronic transmission of election results from polling units.
The protesters, under the banner of the Take-It-Back Movement, Enough is Enough Nigeria, and various civil society coalitions, arrived at the Three Arms Zone with the bedding items to dramatize their message: “We will sleep here until you pass the bill.”
The group marched from the Unity Fountain to the National Assembly gate, where they laid out mattresses on the ground, sat on them, and vowed to remain until the leadership of both chambers commits to fast-tracking and passing the mandatory electronic transmission clause.
Security & Police Response Heavy police presence was deployed around the complex, but no major clash occurred. Officers allowed the protesters to remain at the gate but prevented entry into the premises. The protest remained peaceful throughout the day.

The mattress protest has gone viral online with hashtags #MattressRevolution, #NoTransmissionNoSleep, and #PassTheBill trending nationwide. Many Nigerians have commended the creativity while urging lawmakers to act before the deadline.
This is a developing story.
