The political crisis in Rivers State escalated further on Thursday, January 16, 2026, as pro-Wike lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly, during a live press conference in Port Harcourt, insisted on proceeding with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The lawmakers, addressing journalists under the leadership of Speaker Martins Amaewhule, accused Governor Fubara of blackmail and lacking the integrity and trust required to lead the oil-rich state amid the ongoing rift.

“Governor Fubara has resorted to blackmail and intimidation tactics instead of genuine dialogue. He lacks the moral standing and trust to resolve this crisis,” the lawmakers stated in a joint address.

They reiterated that the notice of impeachment, earlier threatened within seven days, remains active and will be served unless the governor fully complies with constitutional and legislative resolutions.

The press conference came hours after Governor Fubara accused the Assembly of working against the interest of the state and vowed to resist any “illegal” impeachment attempt.

The lawmakers dismissed the governor’s claims, insisting their actions are in defence of the constitution, rule of law, and the interest of Rivers people.

Key accusations levelled against Governor Fubara include:
Refusal to implement resolutions of the House.
Alleged diversion of state funds.
Undermining the legislative arm through executive overreach.
Blackmailing lawmakers and political stakeholders.

The pro-Wike faction, which claims majority control of the Assembly, has been locked in a fierce battle with Governor Fubara since late 2023, leading to parallel sittings, court cases, and occasional violence.

Analysts warn that continued escalation could lead to a constitutional crisis, especially with local government elections looming and national attention on the 2027 general elections.

Security has been heightened around the Government House, Assembly complex, and major roads in Port Harcourt amid fears of protests or clashes.
