Two teenagers shot and killed three people on Monday at the Islamic Center of San Diego, the largest mosque in San Diego County, in an incident being investigated as a hate crime.

Police officers who responded to the scene found the bodies of three victims just outside the entrance to the Islamic center. The attackers were later discovered dead inside a car nearby.

Among those killed was a security guard who officials say prevented a more deadly massacre by confronting the gunmen at the entrance. His quick action is credited with saving many lives inside the mosque during what could have been a larger attack.

The killings have sparked widespread concern about the rising wave of Islamophobia and violence against religious institutions in the United States. Threats and attacks on mosques, synagogues, and churches have increased in recent years, largely fueled by tensions from conflicts in the Middle East.

In response to the shooting, several police departments across California and other parts of the United States announced they would increase patrols around mosques, Islamic cultural centers, and other houses of worship as a precautionary measure.

The Islamic Center of San Diego has been a central place of worship and community gathering for Muslims in the region for decades. Community leaders described the attack as a heartbreaking assault on a place of peace and prayer.
