President Bola Tinubu has thrown his full support behind the use of consensus for the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries, urging party members to shun “do-or-die” politics as the ruling party prepares for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Thursday, President Tinubu described the commencement of the primaries as a historic moment for the APC and called on all aspirants and stakeholders to place the interest of the party above personal ambitions.

“The APC was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, sacrifice, and selflessness,” the President said. “As we begin this process, I urge all members to conduct themselves with decorum and to see the party’s interest above individual interests.”

Tinubu warned against rancorous contests that could weaken the party, stressing that consensus had been effectively used in the past to reduce friction and produce widely accepted candidates.

“Consensus does not mean imposition. It means consultation, dialogue, and agreement in the interest of the party and the country,” he added. “Do-or-die politics has no place in a progressive party. We must avoid actions that will polarize us or give our opponents an advantage.”

The President’s intervention comes as the APC begins internal processes to select candidates for governorship, National Assembly, and other elective positions nationwide. Party leaders have indicated that consensus will be encouraged in several states to prevent divisive and expensive primaries.

APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, had earlier signalled that the party would push for consensus where possible, while allowing competitive primaries in areas where agreement cannot be reached.

Political analysts view Tinubu’s statement as a strategic move to consolidate control over the party machinery and minimise internal conflicts that could affect the APC’s performance in 2027.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to release the full timetable for the 2027 polls, but parties have already begun early preparations.

President Tinubu concluded by reminding party members that “after the primaries, we are one family with one goal: to serve Nigeria and deepen democracy.”
