Makinde made the announcement on Saturday at a Unity Rally in Ibadan, jointly organised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All People’s Movement (APM) to formalise a new political alliance.
Speaking before a large crowd of party leaders, lawmakers, and grassroots supporters from across the South West, the governor said Nigeria was at a critical crossroads and urged opposition leaders to set aside differences and unite against what he described as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s push toward one-party dominance.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us, not to one party or one group of people. If we are serious about rescuing this country, we must come together now,” Makinde said. “I have consulted widely, and today I am declaring my readiness to offer myself for service at the highest level in 2027.”

Makinde, who is currently serving his second term as governor, has earned praise for his focus on infrastructure development, education reform, and maintaining relative stability in Oyo State. He has also emerged as a prominent voice within the PDP and is seen by many as a bridge between the party’s older generation and younger politicians.
His declaration adds to the growing list of potential presidential contenders as opposition parties begin early mobilisation. The alliance with the APM is viewed as a strategic move to broaden the opposition’s appeal beyond traditional PDP strongholds and attract voters disillusioned with the current administration.
Political analysts believe Makinde’s entry could significantly influence the PDP’s presidential primaries and force a serious conversation on zoning and candidate selection strategies.
The APC is yet to issue an official response, but insiders say the party is already preparing to counter the emerging opposition coalition.
The Unity Rally also featured goodwill messages from APM national leaders and PDP stakeholders, who pledged to collaborate on voter mobilisation, policy development, and candidate selection ahead of 2027.

Makinde concluded his speech by urging Nigerians, particularly the youth, to register and collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), emphasising that “no change happens without participation.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to release the full timetable for the 2027 general elections.
