Former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko has officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending years of political association with the party.

Mimiko, who served as governor from 2009 to 2017, submitted his resignation letter to the PDP leadership in April. In the letter, he expressed gratitude to party members for the opportunity to serve but stated that it was time to chart a new political course.
The resignation comes as political realignments intensify across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections. Mimiko, a medical doctor and former Minister of Health, has been a major player in Ondo politics for over two decades. He first won the governorship on the Labour Party platform in 2009 after a prolonged legal battle, later joined the PDP in 2014, briefly returned to the Labour Party, and rejoined the PDP before the 2019 elections.
Political observers believe his exit could significantly weaken the PDP’s structure, particularly in Ondo South, and influence the decisions of other key stakeholders in the state.

Sources close to Mimiko say he is currently consulting with associates, traditional leaders, and political allies across Ondo Central, North, and South senatorial districts before announcing his next political move.
The PDP in Ondo State is yet to issue an official response. Party officials in Akure said the state executive would meet soon to assess the impact of the development on the party’s preparations for 2027.
Mimiko has not confirmed which platform he plans to join, but speculation is rife about possible talks with the All Progressives Congress (APC) or emerging third-force political movements.

When contacted, Mimiko’s media aide said an official announcement would be made “at the appropriate time” after wider consultations are completed.
