The traditional ruler of Ahungha Village in the Agamo Area of Akure North Local Government Area, Ondo State, Oba Kehinde Jacob Faledun, has been killed by suspected gunmen in a foiled kidnap attempt.

The incident occurred late Tuesday night, February 18, 2026, when the monarch was reportedly attacked at his palace by armed assailants who attempted to abduct him. Community sources say the gunmen opened fire when the royal father and his aides resisted, leading to his death on the spot.

Official & Community Response Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Tee-Leo Ikoro, confirmed the incident and said a manhunt has been launched for the killers. “The Commissioner of Police has ordered a massive deployment of tactical teams to comb the forests and apprehend the perpetrators.”

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa condemned the killing in strong terms, describing it as “barbaric, cowardly and unacceptable.” He directed security agencies to fish out the killers and ensure the safety of traditional rulers and communities.

The Akure North Local Government Chairman and several royal fathers in the area have called for urgent security reinforcement at palaces and villages across the council.

Oba Kehinde Jacob Faledun was a respected first-class monarch in the Akure North axis, known for his peaceful disposition and community development efforts. His death has sent shockwaves through the traditional institution in Ondo State.

This is the latest in a series of attacks on traditional rulers in the South-West, with several monarchs killed or kidnapped in Ekiti, Ondo and Osun in recent years.

The body of the monarch has been deposited at the morgue, while arrangements for his burial are being made in line with Yoruba royal customs.
