President Donald Trump has warned Canadian aircraft company Bombardier that it can no longer sell its products in the United States unless it moves its manufacturing operations to America.
In a Truth Social post on Monday, Trump wrote: “NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a ‘piggybank’.”
The warning comes amid an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada, and just hours before Canadian retaliatory tariffs are set to be imposed on $20 billion (£14.7 billion) worth of American goods.

It remains unclear how the Trump administration intends to block Bombardier from doing business in the United States.
The Montreal-based company already operates a factory in Kansas that builds special mission military planes and employs 3,500 American workers. It also has facilities in Texas, Arizona, Florida, Connecticut, Illinois, Delaware, California, Washington DC and New Jersey.
About half of Bombardier’s fleet — 5,100 aircraft — is operated by customers based in the United States.
In a statement on Monday, Bombardier did not address Trump’s threat directly but emphasised its significant American footprint.

“Bombardier values its great partnership with American companies and its US employees,” the company said. “Our plan is to continue to invest in our people, our customers and the communities in which we operate across the country.”
The company noted that its operations create tens of thousands of US jobs through its growing American presence.
Bombardier’s jets are built at facilities in Canada, the United States and Mexico, and the company says its products comply with the North American free trade agreement signed during Trump’s first term — known as CUSMA in Canada and the USMCA in the United States.

Bombardier is one of Canada’s largest companies, having contributed C$7.4 billion ($5.4 billion) to the country’s GDP in 2024. It is also one of the largest employers in Quebec’s manufacturing sector.
Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette described the company as “a source of pride” for her province and “a flagship of our economy.”
She said she had reached out to Bombardier CEO Éric Martel and offered her government’s full support.

Responding to Trump’s threat, Fréchette wrote: “I will not respond to provocation with provocation. Quebec will not allow anyone to dictate where our companies must produce in order to access a market.”
Trade talks between Canada and the United States collapsed late last month after Ottawa walked away from the negotiating table. The US subsequently imposed new 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the Trump administration of presenting last-minute terms that were “unfair” and “uneconomic,” while US officials claimed Carney refused to sign a deal for political reasons linked to Trump’s unpopularity in Canada — an accusation the Canadian leader denied.

The latest threat against Bombardier further escalates tensions between the two neighbours as both sides dig in ahead of the new round of Canadian retaliatory tariffs.
