A prominent Kano-based activist has urged the federal and state governments to urgently beef up security in Kajiru and surrounding communities in Kano State following the abduction of over 100 persons in a massive overnight raid.
The activist, who spoke on condition of anonymity for safety reasons, described the incident as “one of the most brazen mass abductions” in recent months in the North-West, saying residents are living in fear and many families are still waiting for news of loved ones.
“Over 100 people were taken in one night from Kajiru community. Women, children, elderly included. This is no longer isolated banditry; it is organised terrorism on our soil. Nigerians must be briefed fully on what is being done not just statements, but visible security deployment, drones, more troops, community policing, and intelligence sharing,” the activist said in a widely shared audio message circulating on WhatsApp and X on Thursday, January 23, 2026.
The abductions occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, January 22, when gunmen on motorcycles stormed the rural community in Rogo Local Government Area, shooting sporadically before herding villagers away into nearby forests.
Kano State Police Command has confirmed the incident but put the number of abducted persons at “several,” while community leaders and eyewitnesses insist the figure exceeds 100. No group has claimed responsibility, but the attack bears the hallmarks of armed bandit groups operating in the region.

The activist criticised the slow official response and lack of detailed public briefing, saying: “People are traumatised. Families don’t know if their loved ones are alive. Government must brief Nigerians transparently how many were taken, what is being done to rescue them, what security measures are now in place to prevent a repeat. Silence only breeds more fear.”
He also called for the immediate establishment of forward operating bases, increased aerial surveillance, and better coordination between the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS, and local vigilantes in vulnerable border communities.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has directed security agencies to “leave no stone unturned” in rescuing the victims, while President Bola Tinubu has been briefed and assured of federal support.
This is a developing story.
