Nigeria’s U-20 women’s football team, the Falconets, will be hoping to make history at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland by winning the country’s first-ever title in the competition.
The Falconets have a strong history at the tournament. They have qualified for every edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup since it began in 2002. However, despite their regular appearances and strong performances, they have never won the trophy.
Nigeria came closest in 2010 and 2014 when the Falconets reached the final on both occasions. In 2010, they faced Germany in the final but lost to the European side. Four years later, they had another chance to win the title at the tournament in Canada, but Germany again stood in their way. Nigeria lost 1–0 after extra time and returned home with the silver medal.

The 2014 team remains one of Nigeria’s most memorable youth teams because it featured Asisat Oshoala. She had an outstanding tournament, scoring seven goals and winning both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards.
Since that 2014 final, the Falconets have struggled to reach the final again. They reached the quarter-finals in 2018 and 2022, while they were eliminated in the Round of 16 in 2024. Their performances show that Nigeria remains competitive at the youth level, but the team has not been able to take the final step towards winning the trophy.
The Falconets qualified for the 2026 World Cup after a successful African qualifying campaign. They defeated Rwanda 5–0 on aggregate, beat Senegal 3–1 on aggregate and then overcame Malawi 3–2 on aggregate to secure their place in Poland.

At the 2026 tournament, Nigeria has been placed in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and New Caledonia. Their first match will be against Spain on September 7, followed by China PR on September 10 and New Caledonia on September 13.
The group stage will be an important test for the Falconets, especially because Spain and China are known for producing strong youth teams. Nigeria will need to be focused and consistent if they want to progress to the knockout stages.
One interesting part of Nigeria’s history is that both of their previous final defeats came against Germany. Germany, however, will not be at the 2026 tournament after failing to qualify. This means the Falconets will have a different challenge if they make it to the final this time.

The main goal is clear: Nigeria wants to go one step further than it did in 2010 and 2014.
After two runners-up finishes and years of trying to reach the top, the Falconets now have another opportunity to make history.
