Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the Court of Appeal’s decision to stay the execution of the Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of five political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the ADC for the 2027 elections, described the ruling as a significant victory for Nigeria’s democracy.

In a unanimous decision on Tuesday, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal led by Justice Abba Mohammed held that Federal High Court Judge Justice Peter Lifu acted in disregard of an earlier order of the appellate court.

The panel noted that the lower court was directed on May 22 to stay proceedings in the matter pending the determination of appeals filed before the Court of Appeal.

Reacting swiftly to the verdict, Atiku commended the appellate court’s intervention, particularly noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) itself initiated the application for the stay of execution.

“I welcome the Court of Appeal’s decision to stay the execution of the Federal High Court judgement seeking the deregistration of our great party, the ADC, and four other political parties. It is particularly significant that INEC itself initiated the application for the stay,” Atiku wrote on his social media platform.

The former Vice President expressed concern over what he described as “judicial contradictions and politically charged rulings,” stating that the judiciary is currently under intense public scrutiny.
“Any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s hard-won democracy through judicial manipulation is a grave danger to the Republic. If our democracy suffers further injury, history will demand accountability from those entrusted with dispensing justice,” he warned.

Atiku urged the judiciary to uphold constitutional principles and restore public confidence in the institution.

On Monday, Justice Peter Lifu had ordered INEC to deregister the ADC, Action Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), citing their failure to meet constitutional requirements for continued registration.

The judge also restrained INEC from recognising the parties, accepting their nominations, or allowing them to participate in the 2027 general elections.

The judgment followed a suit filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL).
This latest development temporarily halts the deregistration process and gives the affected parties a reprieve as the appeals are heard.
