The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has blacklisted three local government areas in Kebbi State from receiving corps members due to escalating security threats.

The scheme has also formally requested the relocation of its orientation camp from Dakingari to a safer location within the state.

Bala Kagarko, NYSC Coordinator in Kebbi State, disclosed this during an interview with journalists on Tuesday at the temporary orientation camp in Basura, Jega Local Government Area.

“For the safety of corps members, we are no longer posting them to Augie, Arewa, and Sakaba local government areas of the state,” Kagarko stated.
He noted that the rising insecurity has caused a sharp decline in the number of corps members deployed to Kebbi, leaving the state with the lowest number of corps members in the country.

“We no longer have enough doctors to post to state hospitals, and there are not enough corps members to deploy to schools and other areas where they are needed to contribute to development,” he added.
Kagarko revealed that several appeals have been made to relevant authorities, but no positive response has been received so far.

The development comes amid renewed banditry and insurgent activities in parts of the North-West.
Last week, suspected Lakurawa insurgents reportedly killed at least 20 people in Fasken Rafi village in Arewa LGA — one of the three areas blacklisted by the NYSC.

The Kebbi State Government described the attack as “tragic” and expressed condolences to the affected families. Deputy Governor Umar Tafida led a delegation to the area on Saturday and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling insecurity and protecting lives and property.

The NYSC’s decision underscores the growing concern over the safety of young graduates serving in volatile regions across the country. Many stakeholders have repeatedly called on federal and state governments to address the root causes of insecurity to enable the scheme to function effectively.
