Former President Goodluck Jonathan has strongly refuted a media report alleging that he was offered N500 billion to contest against Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in the 2027 election.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan described the report as “entirely false and baseless.”

Eze called on Nigerians to disregard the “fabricated” story, noting that it falsely attributed a statement to the former president.
“The report failed to state where or when Jonathan allegedly made such a claim, who was present or who purportedly made the alleged offer,” he said.

The former president’s media aide described the publication as bearing “all the hallmarks of fake news deliberately crafted” to mislead the public and drag Jonathan into unnecessary political controversy.

He warned that the approach of a political season often brings a surge in misinformation and false attributions, urging Nigerians to verify sensational claims before sharing them.

The denied report claimed Jonathan said he rejected an offer of N500 billion to run against Obi and split South-South votes.

Speculation about Jonathan’s possible return to politics has been rife since May 2026, when a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki announced him as its presidential candidate at a special national convention in Abuja.

However, the faction is yet to formally present the party’s flag to Jonathan, even as the deadline for submission of nomination forms to INEC on July 11 approaches.

The former president has not publicly confirmed interest in contesting the 2027 election.

This latest denial aims to put to rest rumours linking him to alleged financial inducements for political participation.
